Key Takeaways

  • CRS reported Q1 EPS of $3.25, beating estimates, as revenues rose 8.8% year over year to $798.2M.
  • Aerospace bookings accelerated, while higher-priced long-term agreements strengthened CRS' earnings outlook.
  • CRS reaffirmed its FY27 operating income target of $850-$880M and FY29 goal of $1.2-$1.3B.

Carpenter Technology Corporation (CRS - Free Report) emphasized accelerating aerospace demand, stronger pricing opportunities and confidence in its long-term profit targets during its first-quarter fiscal 2027 earnings call. Management maintained its outlook despite planned maintenance downtime and uneven defense orders.

The company reported earnings of $3.25 per share, surpassing the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $2.97. Revenues of $798.2 million missed the Zacks Consensus Estimate of $807.8 million by 1.2%. However, revenues increased 8.8% year over year.

CRS Sees Aerospace Bookings Accelerate

Chairman and CEO Tony Thene highlighted strengthening commercial aerospace demand, with supply-chain bookings increasing 25% year over year.

Bookings in aerospace structural and distribution markets rose 23% sequentially and 49% year over year. Aerospace engine bookings advanced 10% sequentially and 22% annually.

Thene emphasized that several customers are ordering below levels needed to support current aircraft production rates. He expects additional orders as manufacturers increase production and distributors replenish declining inventories.

Carpenter Expects Continued Pricing Gains

Thene described pricing as a significant earnings driver, supported by increasing demand and constrained nickel superalloy capacity.

Management completed two significant aerospace long-term agreements during the quarter at higher prices. Additional agreements under negotiation offer further pricing opportunities.

Responding to Deutsche Bank, Thene clarified that renewed agreements primarily involve existing customers requesting higher volumes. He indicated that market-share percentages should remain relatively stable, with contractual growth driven by greater material requirements.

CRS Maintains Strong Profit Outlook

Chief Financial Officer Tim Lain projected second-quarter fiscal 2027 operating income of $192 million to $197 million, representing anticipated year-over-year growth of 24% to 27%.

Management maintained its fiscal 2027 operating income outlook of $850 million to $880 million and its fiscal 2029 target of $1.2 billion to $1.3 billion.

During JPMorgan's questioning, Thene identified potential upside from volume, productivity and pricing compared with the assumptions underlying the fiscal 2027 guidance. He emphasized that confidence in the company's financial targets had strengthened since the previous quarter.

Carpenter Defends Margins Amid Maintenance

Carpenter's Specialty Alloys Operations segment recorded an adjusted operating margin excluding surcharge revenue of 37.7%, compared with 32% a year earlier.

Segment operating income reached $216.3 million, increasing 27% year over year despite planned preventive maintenance and fewer available production days.

Responding to TD Cowen, Thene explained that productivity improvements across multiple manufacturing processes helped offset downtime. Management anticipates additional margin expansion as volumes and pricing improve, although quarterly product mix could create fluctuations.

CRS Addresses Defense Orders and Cash Flow

Thene acknowledged weaker defense bookings despite substantial underlying material demand. Funding uncertainties have prevented supply-chain customers from placing orders consistent with anticipated military requirements.

During discussions with JonesTrading, he explained that greater budget clarity could trigger a significant increase in material orders. Management continues engaging with defense manufacturers preparing for future programs.

Lain reported negative quarterly free cash flow of $24.8 million, reflecting capital expenditures and working capital requirements. He maintained the fiscal 2027 free cash flow forecast of $400 million to $430 million, expecting cash generation to strengthen later in the year.

Carpenter Prioritizes Capacity and Shareholder Returns

Management reiterated its commitment to expanding manufacturing capacity while maintaining shareholder distributions. The brownfield expansion remains on schedule and within budget, with operations expected to begin in early fiscal 2028.

Carpenter repurchased $133.9 million of shares during the quarter and continued paying its quarterly dividend. Its new $1 billion repurchase authorization supports additional capital returns.

Thene maintained a confident outlook centered on operational execution. Increasing aerospace demand, improved productivity and favorable contract pricing remain central to the company's long-term growth strategy.
